MCG MINUTES 2007

Members of the Music Cognition Group (MCG) met during the 2007 meeting of SMT in Baltimore. After introducing ourselves, describing our current work, and hearing music-cognition-related announcements, Helen Brown led us in a round-table discussion of Chapter 4 of Justin London's HEARING IN TIME.

MEMBERS

Here (with apologies to any whose names I may have missed or misspelled) is a list of those who attended that meeting: Ben Anderson, Helen Brown, Ives Chor, Jane Clenndining, Ben Duane, Kelly Francis, Rachel Hall, Robert Hatten, SuJin Hong, David Huron, Marianne Kielian-Gilbert, Carol Krumhansl, Steve Larson, Fred Lerdahl, Justin London, Peter Martens, Besty Marvin, Panos Mavromatis, Elizabeth Ocampo, Crystal Peoples, Olaf Post, Eve Poudrier, Nancy Rogers, Eric Slegowski, Scott Spiegelberg, Chris Stover, David Temperley, Laurel Trainor, J. Kent Williams, and Jason Yust.

CURRENT WORK

Members listed the following topics, on which they are currently engaged in research: absolute pitch acquisition, articulation and timbre, associativity, attention, auditory perception, auditory stream segregation and music analysis, beat and meter perception, Carter and polymeter, change deafness, cognition and pedagogy, complicated music, computer modeling and machine learning, development and culture, embodiment, emotion, form and hierarchy, learning non-tonal languages, learning writing skills, mathematical models, motor synchronization, music and emotion, music and gesture, musical forces, perception of musical distance, rhythm and meter, rhythmic issues in groove-based music of African diaspora, scale theory, tonal music, and tonal tension.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

The group was pleased to note that the program committee had arranged a plenary session devoted to music cognition (with contributions by Betsy Marvin, Carol Krumhansl, Fred Lerdahl, Laurel Trainor, and David Huron). Kent Williams asked if we'd like to collaborate with the Pedagogy Interest Group (which he chairs) on a special-session proposal. Noting that their meeting would take place later that day, interested members of MCG were invited to attend the pedagogy meeting with the idea of further exploring that idea. Carol Krumhansl mentioned several upcoming meetings and Besty Marvin mentioned that she'd give further information on those meetings during her introduction to the SMT Plenary Session, and that she will forward that information to our email discussion list. Steve Larson mentioned that, after ten years of chairing the MCG, he would appreciate advice on whether to continue in that role, or to pass the chairing of our group on to another member; all were invited to email to him at steve@uoregon.edu any thoughts they might have on the subject.

SUBCOMMITTEE REPORT

Peter Martens reported on the process by which a subcommittee of MCG members vetted proposals to be later submitted to the program committee.

BOOK DISCUSSION

The bulk of our meeting was spent discussing Chapter 4 of Justin London's book HEARING IN TIME. The author was on hand to respond to questions about the theory and provide additional information. The discussion, ably led by Helen Brown, was lively and interesting.
