MCG minutes
10/31/02

The Music Cognition Group (MCG) of the Society for Music Theory met on
Thursday, 10/31/02, during the annual meeting of SMT in Columbus.

PRESENT (alphabetical): Kate Covington, David Huron, Gary Karpinski, Bill
Lake, Steve Larson, Fred Lerdahl, Justin London, Chuck Lord, Lisa Margulis,
Peter Martens, Betsy Marvin, Panos Mavromatis, Matt Pace, Laurel Parsons,
Jay Rahn, Nancy Rogers, Art Samplaski, Scott Spiegelberg, Benjamin Whitcomb,
Leigh VanHandel

We began by introducing ourselves and listing current research interests.

INTERESTS (alphabetical): absolute pitch, auditory imagery, aural skills
acquisition, computer models, consonance and dissonance, error detection,
expectation, implicit learning, memory, music therapy, musical forces,
rhythm and meter, similarity relations, tempo, tonal tension, and tuning and
classification

David Huron announced Friday morning's Special Session ("The Cognition of
Listening and Performance -- An Ohio Perspective", chaired by Don Gibson,
with papers by David Butler, David Huron, Mari Riess Jones, and Caroline
Palmer) and he invited all interested to lab tours at OSU later that same
day.

David also asked how many proposals for cognition papers were rejected by
this year's program committee. The answer seemed to be "a small number this
year". This led to a discussion about the number of papers accepted by SMT.
Some people noted that more scholars would come if more papers were accepted
(because their travel would be funded only if their paper were accepted).
But it was also noted that financial pressures make it difficult to accept
more papers. Others noted that poster sessions are one way to get more
people involved.

We listed the following upcoming meetings as possible venues for MCG members
to present their work:
SMT 2003 = Madison (solo)
SMT 2004 = Seattle (joint)
SMT 2005 = ? (probably solo)
SMPC 2003 = Las Vegas
ICMPC 2004 = Northwestern
ESCOM 2003 = Hanover

Representatives of SMPC, ICMPC, and ESCOM offered to post messages to
smt-mcg about upcoming meetings of those groups. Jay Rahn noted that
presentation at ESCOM includes a guarantee of publication, and he noted that
ESCOM will accept general session descriptions. Betsy Marvin noted that SMT
proposals are more difficult and that Special Session proposals have become
more restrictive.

After discussing a number of possible topics for Special Session proposals,
the following people agreed to take responsibility for organizing
submissions:
EXPECTATION (SMT 2003 in Madison) Lisa Margulis
COMPUTER MODELS (SMT 2004 in Seattle), David Huron
RHYTHM AND METER (SMT 2004 in Seattle), Laurel Parsons
POSTER SESSION (SMT 2004 in Seattle) Leigh VanHandel

We agreed that these "Proposal Shepherds" may organize their proposals
however they like, may select a small number of MCG members to help as a
sub-committee, may include their own papers in such proposals, and may count
on the rest of us for additional assistance.

I hope that our Shepherds will soon post calls for papers for their Special
Sessions, with procedures and deadlines.

I think that the meeting was a productive one, and I look forward to hearing
more about everyone's research!

Steve
